Who is Chris Peck?
That seems a very reasonable question to ask, so allow me to introduce myself...
I am a graduate of Computer Science from the University of Hull, where I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) 2:1 honours degree.University
During the duration of the degree course I have become knowledgeable in
- Writing in programming languages such as Java, C# and C++
- Designing and querying databases (using SQL, JDBC, ODBC, etc)
- programming computer graphics using OpenGL
- Designing user interfaces in Javax Swing and Windows Forms
- Artificial intelligence
- Networked computer systems
- Distributed computer systems
- Project management (including UML and time-management diagrams)
- Management skills
Further details and examples of coursework can be found in the Work :: University section of this site.
During the final year of the degree course, my final year project focused upon designing a database application for a membership list and newsletter. This involved evaluating systems currently employed by the client, designing and proposing solutions and improvements to the current system, and designing, planning, testing and implementing the new system within the deadlines imposed by myself, the client and the University. The final deliverable was a Java application, with Swing user interface, which interacted with a Microsoft Access database (via SQL queries and JDBC), a Microsoft Word document and the internet, with the scope for future additions and improvements where required.
Full details and the project reports can be found in the Work :: University :: Final Year Project section of this site.
Employment
Since graduating I have been employed as a Computer Programmer working on a number of projects and applications. These projects have included work for external clients, new applications and modifications to existing applications. Obviously I cannot go into much detail about these projects on this website, except for describing the types of technologies, etc, I have gained knowlege in.These projects and applications have allowed me to gain or further my experience in:
- The Microsoft .NET Framework
- C#, C++ and Java programming languages
- Java Server Pages, XML and SQL queries to a database
Prior to university, I undertook a gap year working in second line I.T. support, involved in network and e-mail administration, hardware and software installations, and problem solving.
Further details are available in the Work :: Employment section of this site.
Outside of work and studying
Amongst other things, whilst at university I was president of Hull University Union's Indie Sounds society, a position which involved:
- Organising live music nights
- Organising trips to gigs
- Negotiating discounted entry to Indie club nights
And before starting university I was a member of Bolsover Drama Group, where as well as appearing on stage, I:
- Helped with promotion of shows and events
- Designed and edited the group's website and newsletter
- Was one half of the double-act which provided the entertainment at the group's annual dinners
Details of these and much more in the Life section of the site...
Website design
I've designed websites for a number of organisations, companies and individuals. These have been designed using Cascading Style Sheets and Dreamweaver. A portfolio of these can be found in the Website Design section of this site.
Anything else?
Music
I enjoy listening to, and when possible watching, music.
I saw lots of new, unsigned bands while at university (some of which have now got recording contracts, such as Mohair, and a little-known band called Arctic Monkeys (they were third on the bill, and there was six people in the audience, but we knew then they were going to be big!)
I've also seen more established bands such as Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Razorlight, The Zutons, The Bluetones, Speedway, Biffy Clyro, Goldie Lookin Chain, Electric Six, Morrissey, The Pixies, The Ordinary Boys, The Cure, Meat Loaf,...
Oh, and the lead singer from the band Boy Kill Boy shares the same name as me!
Sports
I enjoy watching (and playing - see AFC A-Block) football (including Nottingham Forest), and watching Formula 1, as well as having a passing interest in other sports. I was also a member of the squash and canoing societies at university (not at the same time - obviously - as the ball would just float rather than bounce!).
The rest...
I've also got an NEBS Business Management certificate and helped in year 7 Geography lessons when I was in the sixth form.
