Life

Hull University Union Indie Sounds society

Whilst at university, I became involved with Hull University Union's Indie Sounds society. The society's role is to organise gigs and trips for it's members, students who are followers of indie music (bands such as The Smiths, The Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, etc.).

For the year 2003/04, I was elected to the post of vice-president of the society, and the following year (2004/05) was elected president.

HUU Indie Sounds society presents 'Live & Loud'...

Whilst in command of the society, I orgainised five live music nights (known ad 'LIVE & LOUD' in the student union's John McCarthy bar. These involved up to four live bands on one stage in one evening, with cheap entry and drinks promotions. The bands were a mix of well known, local bands (such as The Morphines, The Applewhites, Fiftynine Violets), unsigned bands from elsewhere in the country (such as Kardomah, Draw, Atraiou), students performing for the first time (Divided by Time, Apple Jack) and the rest of the Indie Sounds committee (The Indie Sounds houseband).

It all began in the second semester of the 2003/04 term: It was decided that the society should orgainise a 'social' gathering for it's members. Over the next few weeks of planning, the room was booked, and interest was received from member's bands. That 'social' became the first 'LIVE & LOUD' night, as the success prompted further nights, held in October and December 2004, and February and April 2005.

March 2004: Divided by Time supported by The Narks

October 2004: The Charlie Parkers

December 2004: Draw supported by Fiftynine Violets, Abiotic and Winterlong

February 2005: The Morphines supported by Kardomah and Apple Jack

April 2005: The Applewhites supported by Atriou and the Indie Sounds Houseband (plus a further four bands in the student union's Asylum night club in conjunction with Thee Box

Deals

As part of my role in the society, I also negotiated discounted entry to other indie nights in Hull, including The Rockit (Hull University Union), Yo-Yo (The Welly Club), Sweet & Sour (Silhouettes) and Under the Influence (The Adelphi Club).
