I am currently employed in the post of Computer Programmer for Leeds-based software development firm Geosoft. The role involves all aspects of software engineering from taking instructions of requirements from potential customers to devising an effective design, specification, implementation, testing, documentation, maintenance, extensions and upgrades.
- Internal work such as assisting the company to automate its method of selling products and services over the internet and by traditional means
- Internal work involving contributing ideas to discussions about new products and services that the company might introduce
- External work for the company's large contracts for the European Community
- External work for customers who require extensions and enhancements to existing software
- Internal work such as performing routine operations such as backing up software, system maintenance, database management and similar tasks.

This Year in Industry gap year placement involved working within the Information Services and Technology department of Boots The Chemist, providing I.T. support to staff based at the company's head office in Nottingham, and its many regional offices. The job included:
- LAN (Local area network) administration
- E-mail (Lotus Notes) administration
- Hardware and software installations
- Problem solving and resolution
The job allowed me to develop my knowledge of computer systems, hardware and software, and allowed me to develop my communication skills through communication with internal and external third parties.

During the course of the placement, I got the chance to work outside the office installing software and hardware, and also solving problems. This placement broadened my knowledge of the workings of Internet service providers (ISPs).
